Australia 306 for 6 (Haddin 87*, Symonds 87, Hayden 75, Sreesanth 3-67) beat India 222 (Dhoni 58, Hogg 3-40) by 84 runs

Australia duly claimed the 1-0 lead that they had threatened during Saturday's washed-out series opener, stamping their authority over India. India were brought down to earth after the euphoria of the Twenty20 World Cup triumph by a determined Australia who thrashed the hosts by an emphatic margin of 84 runs in the second One-dayer on Tuesday.

With all the rain about, the decision at the toss was always going to be a tricky one but Dhoni's decision to bowl first, having chosen to play two spinners and to leave out a medium-pacer, smacked of a gamble on the weather intervening. Dhoni put the Australians in to bat in the hope of exploiting the wet conditions, but as the sun dried out the pitch and its surrounding area, India's hopes evaporated.

In a completely lop-sided encounter, the Australians first recovered from early jolts to post a commanding 306 for six and then bundled out the home team for 222 in 47.3 overs to take a 1-0 lead in the seven-match series.

India Vs Australia 2nd ODI Kochi, India

Unexpected showers in Kochi have put the second one-day international at the Jawaharlal

Nehru Stadium in doubt. The rain made it almost impossible for the ground staff to work on the outfield, which has already sustained an entire monsoon of showers.

After the washout in the first match at Bangalore, the second cricket ODI between India and Australia on Tuesday may suffer a similar fate with the rain showing no signs of relenting. It has been raining for the last few days and a heavy shower this morning forced the two teams to abandon their plans for a net practice at the ground which has been left completely soggy.

A sudden shower at 10.50 am today became a 20-minute downpour; locals said a repeat before the start of play would be enough to rule out a match. There were near-perfect blue skies by early evening yet the surface remained soft underfoot and the Met department predicts further rain tomorrow.

With the met office predicting more rains on Tuesday, chances of any play being possible tomorrow appear to be very bleak, giving sleepless nights to the Kerala Cricket Association (KCA) which is toiling hard to keep the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in good condition for the match.
